Event #3 of the 2021 WSOP is the $1,000 COVID-19 Relief Charity Event. This No-Limit Hold’em tournament started on Thursday, September 30 and ran for two days. It’s a bit different from most tournaments on the 2021 WSOP schedule that are limited to just one rebuy or do not allow rebuys at all. The WSOP added this year’s $1,000 COVID-19 Relief No-Limit Hold’em tournament to the 2021 schedule to raise money for “charitable organizations benefiting frontline health workers.” The event raised $26,600 for charity, thanks to $100 from each buy-in from 266 total entrants donated to charity. It also gave Jeremy Ausmus the chance to come away with his second career WSOP gold bracelet and $48,681. Play was fast-paced from the beginning. Players began the event with 20,000 chips, playing in a turbo structure with quick 20-minute levels. Within eight hours, the Day 1 field had narrowed to the final five players that would return for Day 2 on Friday. Jesse Lonis, who scored a double knockout with pocket kings over John Yocca’s pocket jacks and Kevin Wang’s ace-eight late on Day 1, started Day 2 with the chip lead and 2,285,000 in chips. This charity event allowed for unlimited rebuys during the registration period, to raise as much money for charity as possible. The donations benefited frontline workers in the fight against the pandemic. The COVID-19 Relief Charity Event is new to the 2021 WSOP schedule. Read about the 2021 WSOP Event #3 winner here.
