Event #13 of the 2021 WSOP is the $3,000 Freezeout tournament. This No-Limit Hold’em event ran for three days, starting on October 6. Levels on Day 1 lasted 40 minutes and then switched to 60 minutes for the final two days of the tournament. This is a no re-buy event.
One of the most alluring features of freezeout events at the WSOP (for recreational players) is that pros with fat bankrolls don’t enjoy the advantage of being able to re-buy. All 720 players that entered this year’s 2021 WSOP Event #13 $3,000 Freezeout No-Limit Hold’em were held at just one buy-in. Harvey Mathews maximized his, winning the top prize of $371,914, along with his first WSOP gold bracelet.
This was only Matthews' ninth live tournament cash, according to his Hendon Mob page. Three of his earlier eight cashes came in WSOP events too. Matthews finished 3,632nd in the $500 No-Limit Hold’em Big 50 event in 2019. He also took 282nd place in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event in 2011 for $2,815. In another coup, he came away with 36th in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Six Handed tournament for $12,456 in 2010. That was the largest cash of Mathew’s career before this one.
The $3,000 Freezeout tournament is a new event on the 2021 WSOP schedule. This is one of five tournaments featured at the $3,000 price point this year, down one from the six $3,000 events included on the 2019 WSOP schedule.
