China's Zhen Chen has been honored as the Global Poker Index's Player of the Month for October. Chen stormed to the top of the GPI's monthly leaderboard with an amazing run at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour's recent series in Manila, Philippines, where he won a preliminary event and added four more deep runs.
Along with another October win early in the month at the Poker Dream 12 series in Jeju, South Korea, and a strong showing in an EPT Cyprus high roller, Chen finished with 1,144.51 GPI points for the month. It was a breakout month for Chen by any standard, as his total cashes for October amounted to $255,987, roughly five times his career live-tourney earnings just one month earlier.
Chen's late-October surge pushed him just ahead of American Matthew Wantman on the month's final day. Wantman, the overall winner of the PokerGO Tour's PLO II Series during the month, finished just seven points behind Chen with a 1,136.73 GPI points total.
Third place on the GPI October leaderboard went to Portugal's Diogo Coelho on the strength of his win in the EPT Cyprus Eureka high roller. For the month, Coelho logged 1,114.87 GPI points in October, just 30 points behind Chen.
Adrian Mateos of Spain moved back into the lead in the race to be the GPI's 2024 Player of the Year by finishing fourth in the October points tally. Mateos's 1,005.73 points in October give him 4,068.85 for the year, less than 100 points off American Jesse Lonis.
