The Wynn in Las Vegas is going forward with its summer poker series, despite not having a WSOP around to feed off. And it isn't the only major casino in town hosting a big poker event this summer.
Venetian, a neighboring resort on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, recently announced plans to bring back its annual DeepStack Championship Series, which begins in late May and runs until late July or early August. Exact dates and events haven't yet been finalized.
The same can be said about the upcoming Wynn Summer Poker series. Dates, times, schedules, and structures aren't yet available. But according to the poker room's Twitter account, the series will start a few weeks later than normal.
"You won't be disappointed, but perhaps mark your calendar for the last weekend in June to get the season started. You won't want to miss this," @WynnPoker tweeted.
That comment was in response to @dude904, the Twitter account of 2015 WSOP Main Event champ Joe McKeehen, who makes his account private so only the few he follows can view his tweets. He isn't exactly the most sociable or welcoming poker player ever, to say the least.
Ryan Beauregard, Executive Director of the Wynn Poker Room, chimed in on the conversation.
"I think you’ll find a solid 3-4 weeks of events with timing that is well thought out and scheduled in the best interest of the players," Beauregard informed McKeehen.
Back to normalcy
Wynn's poker room, and the entire city of Las Vegas, is heading back towards normalcy after a rough pandemic year. Earlier this week, the poker room moved back to its normal spot on the Encore side of the property for the first time since COVID-19.
As for the city, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak (D) recently announced that he plans to fully reopen the state on June 1, just in time for the summer poker events in Las Vegas. Business capacity restrictions will be lifted, meaning casinos and restaurants throughout the state will be permitted to operate at full capacity. At present, capacity is limited to 50% in casinos.
Wynn boasts one of the most luxurious poker rooms in the world. Although the schedule isn't yet out, the summer series is certain to feature millions of dollars in guarantees. The buy-ins typically range from $300 to $5,000, similar to what you'll find at the Venetian's DeepStack Championship Series.
Despite the WSOP's move to the fall, the tournament poker scene in Las Vegas this summer will still be popping. Wynn and Venetian are already on board with a summer series, and it's likely other card rooms will hop on board before it's all said and done.
