Antanas "Tony G" Guoga is the subject of a series of Non-Fungible Tokens based around his most infamous catchphrases. Naturally, the series of NFTs will include "On your bike." Guoga announced the upcoming release with a tweet that was couched in his usual terms of humble self-deprecation.
"Dream come true! Tony G NFTs," he wrote. "How can you get one? Holders of $LMT will be able to mint these limited edition Tony G NFTs. —On Your Bike —Ace From Space —Date With An Eight. Stay tuned!"
It appears these three phrases are not the only Tony G NFTs to be produced. He has already released ads for a "We're all winners here," an "I played it like a set," and an "I am the best" NFT on his Twitter too.
Tony G's new life
Tony G was once one of poker's biggest (and most entertainingly obnoxious) personalities. He was famous for riling up his opponents with his fast talking and constant needling. But after Black Friday, he seemed to disappear from the poker world.
His post-poker life has had two main strands: a crypto-currency banking start-up and a seven year stint in politics back in his homeland of Lithuania. And as of this year, Guoga stepped down from the political side of things. He claimed the reason was that he felt unable to "drive real change."
That his move to full-time crypto work came shortly after Bitcoin's dramatic rally in mid-2020 is, no doubt, merely a coincidence.
WTF are NFTs?
Guoga's role as CEO of Cypherpunk Holdings is a major motivator for allowing Lympo to create these NFTs. It is a thematically appropriate publicity stunt that works out nicely for both Guoga and Lympo.
Lympo is a company that describes itself as "a sports NFTs ecosystem including NFTs with IP rights of world-famous athletes and clubs. The ecosystem will also include custom sports characters created by various artists and sports influencers." The Tony G tokens will be part of Lympo's blockchain.
An NFT is effectively an entry in a blockchain ledger that has been assigned to some other asset, like a work of digital art. One way to think of it is as a kind of proof of ownership, which is traded in place of the thing it has been assigned to.
The most famous of these is Everydays: the First 5000 Days, an NFT that is linked to a JPEG file of the digital artwork of the same name by artist Beeple. The NFT for Everydays was sold by London auction house Christie's for $69.2 million. This made it the third most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at the time.
You can see an example of one of Lympo's baseball-card-style Tony G NFTs in the tweet below with the caption: "Tony G NFTs -- pt.4 'On Your Bike!' Class: Legend-- Only 5 of these NFTs!"
