And then, there were three
This December, the skirmishes and deep runs at WSOP Paradise and WPT Wynn events will decide who wins the points war for the coveted Global Poker Index Player of the Year title.
Tracking the three players on the GPI, less than 63 points separates first from third: Jesse Lonis leads with 4374.38, David Coleman has 4320.50, and Adrian Mateos sits at 4312.44. No other player is within 300 points of the trio.
Mateos led the POY briefly in October
For a few weeks this fall, Spaniard phenom Mateos was king of the hill as GPI posted on X that a new sheriff was in town.
āIt feels really good to be #1 again,ā shared Mateos. But little did he know that the high of the lofty #1 spot would be just a fleeting memory within a few weeks.
By mid-November, the surging Lonis drew blood and slashed Mateos down a notch or two by capturing the $50K NLH title and $1,502,000 at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Monte Carlo.
In the meantime, Coleman quietly slipped past Mateos as he attempts to close out a career-defining year with a POY title and add another prize to an ever-expanding trophy case.
The big questions
- Does Coleman want the POY title as much or more than Lonis or Mateos?
- Does Mateos think heās just been very lucky in 2024?
- Does Lonis have a game plan to defeat Mateos if they meet at a final table in the Bahamas?
