The Global Poker Index (GPI) has announced that veteran pro Shannon Shorr has secured the honor of being the GPI's Player of the Month for January 2025.
Shorr began 2025 in style, winning two events at the PokerGO Tour's 'Last Chance' series. Shorr cashed three times in that series and picked up GPI points in four tournaments overall in January, amassing 1,078.90 GPI points during the month. That was just enough to top another American, Spencer Champlin.
Champlin finished with 1,062.03 points, including a win, in his own strong January performance. Brandon Wilson, William Stanford, and 2022 GPI Player of the Year Stephen Song completed the GPI's top five for January.
Tight early race for GPI 2025 POY honor
Shorr also landed in second place at this early juncture in the race to be the GPI's 2025 Player of the Year behind Stanford, who cashed in a remarkable 11 GPI points-qualifying events in January, winning four of them. However, only the top five of Stanford's finishes counted toward the GPI January honor.
Other early leaders include Kristen Foxen in the Female Player of the Year category and Stanford on the Mid-Major POY board. Foxen, now of Canada, also won a Last Chance event and was the only non-American to make the GPI's January top ten for January, which were as follows:
- Shannon Shorr - 1,078.90
- Spencer Champlin - 1,062.03
- Brandon Wilson - 1,038.15
- William Stanford - 970.37
- Stephen Song - 945.07
- Ryan Hogan - 943.23
- Kristen Foxen - 927.01
- Sam Laskowitz - 909.86
- David Chen - 898.18
- Michael Berk - 884.70
Tony 'Ren' Lin is currently the GPI's #1 ranked global player, which is based on a rolling and weighted average of results over the prior 12 months. Shorr, a previous overall GPI leader, currently sits at #3 in that ranking.
