In the poker community, it's easy to become jaded and bitter about the stories that may have once drawn excitement and intrigue. Joshua Suyat and his wife Sarah Lee have a story that just might be the perfect antidote to our collective numbness.
The husband and wife duo both managed to satellite their way into the Main Event at the World Series of Poker for just $215 — a far cry from the $10,000 buy-in attached to the event. "Sarah did a regular $215 satellite randomly throughout the summer and I did the 25-seat scramble on Day 1A of the Main Event," Suyat told us.
Both Suyat and Lee managed to find Day 1 bags. Then, they found Day 2 bags. With momentum now squarely on their side, they found Day 3 bags as well. "I bagged 81,000 on Day 1, 202,000 on Day 2, and 584,000 on Day 3," Lee told us on the break between levels.
Suyat's first three days went similarly: "Just straight up, ran good. Coolering people."
Fast forward to dinner break on Day 4 and both Suyat and Lee are still in the running with sizable stacks. Somehow, the two neglected to agree to a last longer bet. "We never thought about that one," said Suyat.
As a potential husband and wife final table appearance draws closer, Lee told us, "I want to win it. I want to be the first female." Just one of them making it would be epic, but both of them on the final table? That's the kind of fairytale, once-in-a-century storyline that we're here for.
Final table aspirations aside, Lee told PokerOrg that her primary goal at the moment is to make it to Day 7 so she can fly her parents in to cheer her on from the rail. "I can't wait to make it past Day 6 so I can fly my parents in from Korea, that's my goal," Lee said.
Day 4 play saw the husband and wife duo once again bag up chips at the end of the night. Today, Suyat and Lee return for Day 5 with 18 big blinds and 11 big blinds, respectively.
Oh, and if they needed any more relationship run good to spur them onwards, it just so happens to be the tenth anniversary of their meeting. Is this one written in the stars? There's only one way to find out, stay tuned to PokerOrg for all the latest from the WSOP.
