The countdown to the 2024 World Series of Poker is on. Each day until the start of the series on May 28, we'll bring you tips and insider info from some of the biggest names in the game.
Jennifer Tilly is an Oscar-nominated actress and passionate poker player, with over $1 million in tournament winnings. However, you're more likely to find her in a televised high-stakes cash game, and she's one of the regulars on the High Stakes Poker show on PokerGO.
How to prep for the summer grind
The most important thing players can do when they’re heading to the WSOP is to be physically and mentally fit. The days are very long and grueling, and you're going to be spending a lot of time in artificial light and artificial temperature control.
To combat having a weakened immune system, you need to eat right and work out on your days off. I know it’s tempting in Vegas to party, and that is a part of the WSOP experience, but if you have an important tournament the next day, the best thing you can do is go home and get some sleep.
What event are you most looking forward to playing?
I’m most looking forward to Event 52, the $5K 6-max. Six-max is my favorite game because I'm an action player, and at a typical full-ring table, I tend to play too many hands. Also, I always think everybody is bluffing more than they actually are.
Six-max, by the very nature of being short-handed, forces action, and players actually do bluff more than they would on average. You never fall asleep in a 6-max game!
What's the biggest event you're going to play?
The most expensive game I’m planning on playing is Event 26, the $25K 8-max. Any bigger than that, and I would feel slightly sick when I bounce out. There’s a lot of variance in tournaments, and no matter how well you play, there’s no guarantee you will make the money.
That said, I think this tournament will be fun because it’s one seat less than usual. You can stretch out and play a few more hands than you normally would. And because of the higher entry fee, there will be a lot fewer runners, which makes it easier to get to the finish line.
