If you haven't already seen the record-breaking, $1.4M pot that Alan Keating won off of Peter Wang on High Stakes Poker, do yourself a favor and watch the hand play out. Then, listen on as Keating himself walks through the hand in the latest video on his new YouTube channel.
The video features Keating's breakdown of several hands from his session on High Stakes Poker – even hands he isn't a part of – but the real gem comes from his insights into the record-breaking pot against Wang and what it reveals about his approach to these high stakes games.
Insight into Keating's game
When the hand begins, Keating explains his intentions.
"I'm going to play this tricky," he tells the cameras. "I could raise and play it normal, but I'm going to try to trap Peter."
Clearly, Keating wanted to tangle with Wang — he was actively searching for spots to trap him and praying that he fell for the bait. It's one thing to take aim at the perceived whale at the table, but to intentionally set a trap for him to fall into proves that Keating will go to great lengths just to play a massive pot. While he happened to have a monster hand this time, it's not unreasonable to think he could make the same moves with rags.
The hand played out in fairly standard fashion — Keating flopped top set, Wang flopped a flush draw before turning top pair, and the money went in — but knowing that Keating intentionally set out to trap his opponent adds a whole new dynamic to the pot. It's not exactly a secret that Keating wants to battle on the felt, especially with Wang, but here we find out that his pursuit of carnage embraces the budding rivalry narrative surrounding the two players.
Keating wants the fight, he wants a worthy opponent — and he may have found exactly that in Wang.
"I set that trap just for you, Peter. I bet you didn't see that coming," Keating concludes. "If your name is 'Peter the Conqueror', isn't that kind of putting out a challenge? It is to me."
