Wednesday's episode of No Gamble, No Future saw the return of the show's epic Cash of the Titans format.
Defending champion Andrew Robl took his rightful seat as table captain, hoping to take a shot at back-to-back victories. In order to do so, he'll have to outplay and outearn Kristen Foxen, Sean Perry, Stanley Choi, Justin Young, Mike Volfson, and Shawn Madden across the three-day, escalating blinds cash game.
Starting with $100K
The rules and format for Cash of the Titans II followed suit from the game's first iteration, for the most part, with only slight adjustments made. Each player started Day 1 with an initial $100,000 buy-in, with the option of one $100,000 add-on available to them. Plus, each player added $50,000 to the side prize pot.
If any player loses their $200,000, they are eliminated from contention. Unlike last year, players will contend for a daily biggest-winner prize rather than playing only for a cumulative prize. The Day 1 and Day 2 winners will each collect $75,000 from the side prize pot, while the biggest winner overall across all three days of play will take home $200,000 from the side prize pot.
Justin Young unlucky in early going
The story of the early goings centered around Young as he lost two key pots in a rather brutal fashion. The first saw Young defend his big blind with against an under-the-gun raise to $600 from Volfson with . The flop was a good one for Young and he check-called a bet of $700. On the turn , the action went check, check and the two players headed to the river – the perfect card for an explosion of action. Young, having made a set of tens, bet out for $2,000.
Volfson, on the other hand, had made the stone cold nuts with his Broadway straight and raised to $8,000. Young deliberated his options for a while, but eventually sent his cards back to the dealer, making one of the best folds of the night. As commentator Brent Hanks summed it up, "Incredible lay down."
'How in the world does that card come?'
The second hand was, somehow, worse than the first and, once again, involved Young's opponent catching a miracle river card. Choi's open to $600 with saw Young, next to act, only call with , allowing Volfson to come along with and Madden to defend his big blind with . The dealer spread the flop and Young's decision to slowplay his strong holding began to look like a good one as he made top two pair. Even better, Choi continued to bet when checked to, having made a top pair of his own, for $1,200.
Young continued to disguise the strength of his hand with another flat call and Madden sweetened the pot slightly with a call behind. With both opponents drawing thin – 0.3% to win the hand – the turn improved Choi to an inferior two pair and Young still held a hammer-lock on the hand. Madden checked once again and Choi fired another bet, this time for $3,500. Young continued with another call and Madden fled the scene. In all-too-familiar fashion for Young, the river brought the perfect card for his opponent as the completed the board to give Choi a full house.
With $13,300 in the middle, Choi threw out a chunky bet of $11,000. After downplaying his hand the whole way, Young made the call and saw the bad news as Choi flipped over his cards. Again, Hanks summed it up best, asking, "How in the world does that card come?"
Cash of the Titans I set high watermark
In early 2023, PokerGO introduced Cash of the Titans with a lineup chock-full of some of poker's wildest and toughest cash game battlers, including the 2024 Poker Hall of Fame nominee Patrik Antonius, Andrew Robl, MJ Gonzalez, and Eric Persson. The first iteration of the format saw each player put up $1,000,000 as the initial buy-in, along with $100,000 for the side pot, to play in the $500/$500 with escalating blinds game.
With the stakes as high as they were and the group of players so willing to mix it up, it was only a matter of time before the action reached a crescendo. When the time came, it was Persson and Antonius battling it out for a pot worth $1,978,000 – the largest-ever in televised poker history at the time.
Will Cash of the Titans II bring the same wild action? Tune in next Wednesday to find out.
