The 2021 WSOP Event #54: $2,500 Nine-Game Mix 6-Handed is, apart from the dealer's choice events, the largest number of mixed games available in any one event this year. During the tournament, each table rotates through the nine poker variants, changing every six hands.
The nine games in question are:
1. No-Limit Hold’em
2. Seven Card Stud
3. Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better
4. Razz
5. Pot-Limit Omaha
6. Limit Hold’em
7. Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better
8. 2-7 No-Limit Draw
9. 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw
This is also the mix of the Player's Championship.
The nine-game mix replaces the fourteen-game mix of some previous years. Some of the fancier options in the fourteen-game mix, like Badugi, were clearly considered a little too gauche for the world of post-pandemic austerity.
The event ultimately went to Nicholas Julia.
Final table action
Julia had to battle it out through a field of 319 players that included big names who failed to make the money. This category included the likes of Brian Hastings, Felipe Ramos, David "ODB" Baker, Daniel Negreanu, Jason Somerville, Jake Schwartz, Eli Elezra, Matt Glatz, Brian Rast, and David Williams.
Some of the big names that did make it to the money were: Chad Eveslage (47th for $4,064), Jim Collopy (33rd for $4,762), Carol Fuchs (32nd for $4,762), Joe Hachem (14th for $7,626), Mike Matusow (9th for $12,702), and James Woods (8th for $12,702). Woods has been on a bit of a mixed-game tear at this year's series.
After the final six players had redrawn their seats for the FT, Robert Mizrachi was the first to hit the rail.
When Justin Liberto busted in 3rd place, it marked the start of heads-up play between Kristan Lord and Nicholas Julia.
The final hand arrived with betting limits at 40k-80k. The game was, as usual, razz.
The chips went in on 3rd street, with Lord showing a ten and Julia an ace.
They flipped their cards, and the dealer dealt out their hands.
Lord was dealt a frustrating 7-8/T-3-J-Q/K those last three paint cards sucking away any chance he had of catching Julia's near-perfect run out of 2-6/A-4-8-7/A.
Lord took home $104,210 for second place.
